The Arasaka Corporation is a Japanese megacorporation specializing in corporate security, banking, manufacturing, and military technology. Founded in 1915, Arasaka has grown into one of the world's most powerful corporations, maintaining considerable economic, political, and military influence.

In Night City, Arasaka is recognized for its extensive corporate holdings, heavily armed security forces, and longstanding rivalry with Militech. Following the devastating assault on Arasaka Tower in 2077 and the internal turmoil surrounding the Arasaka family, the corporation entered a period of significant restructuring.

As of 2080, its Night City operations are overseen by Regional Director Troy Smith, whose efforts to restore corporate stability and expand Arasaka's security operations have made him an influential, if controversial, figure within the corporation.

History

Origins and Expansion

Founded by Sasai Arasaka in 1915, the corporation initially operated as a manufacturing business in Japan. Under Saburo Arasaka, the company expanded into banking, corporate security, and military industries, eventually becoming an international megacorporation.

Arasaka's financial resources and private military capabilities allowed it to exert considerable influence over governments, corporations, and regional conflicts throughout the world.

2070–2076: Return to Night City

Following the Unification War, Arasaka reestablished its position within Night City, restoring its corporate headquarters in Corporate Plaza.

Its return significantly influenced the city's political and economic environment, particularly through its security operations, financial interests, and competition with Militech.

2077: The Tower Assault

In 2077, Arasaka Tower suffered a devastating assault carried out by the mercenary known as V and their associates.

The attack resulted in the death of Adam Smasher, the destruction of Mikoshi, and significant losses to Arasaka's personnel, investments, and sensitive operations.

Combined with the death of Saburo Arasaka and the internal power struggles involving his successors, the incident severely weakened the corporation's leadership and reputation. Arasaka subsequently suffered considerable financial losses and declining political influence.

The full circumstances surrounding the Arasaka family's internal conflicts and the events within Mikoshi remain subjects of speculation, with much of the information classified or disputed.

2078–2079: Recovery and Reorganization

Following the events of 2077, Arasaka began an extensive restructuring of its remaining Night City operations. Corporate leadership sought to reduce internal instability, protect existing assets, and recover lost business.

Among those involved in the restructuring was Troy Smith, an American executive with a background in corporate security and operational management. Smith advocated for a more practical approach to restoring Arasaka's position, emphasizing security contracts, operational efficiency, and stronger oversight of regional personnel.

His approach gradually gained support as the corporation began stabilizing its local operations. By 2079, Smith had been appointed Regional Director of Night City Operations, tasked with overseeing the continued recovery.

His appointment proved controversial among more traditional elements of Arasaka's leadership. Following years of internal family conflict, the decision to grant considerable regional authority to an American executive was viewed by some as a necessary reform and by others as a departure from the corporation's established traditions.

2080: Renewed Corporate Influence

By 2080, Arasaka has restored a significant operational presence within Night City.

Under Smith's administration, the corporation has consolidated its security command, improved coordination between departments, and placed greater emphasis on maintaining reliable commercial relationships.

Arasaka has also expanded its contracted security activities, including its established role in patrolling portions of Night City's perimeter. Its personnel continue to protect corporate facilities, executives, sensitive shipments, and other company assets.

These efforts have helped stabilize the corporation's local position, although Arasaka remains far from recovering its former dominance. Militech's growing influence and Arasaka's own internal divisions continue to threaten its long-term ambitions.

While Smith's administration has produced improvements, his leadership remains controversial. Traditionalists question his growing authority, while other executives support his results-driven approach to restoring the corporation's profitability and reputation.

Corporate Structure

Arasaka operates through an extensive corporate hierarchy, with departments responsible for administration, security, intelligence, and commercial operations.

Corporate Administration

Responsible for overseeing regional business operations, personnel management, corporate policy, contracts, and external relations.

The Night City branch is currently overseen by Regional Director Troy Smith, who coordinates local operations and reports to the corporation's higher leadership.

Arasaka Security

Arasaka Security serves as the primary protective force for the corporation's Night City operations.

Its responsibilities include:

  • Security patrols and facility protection
  • Executive and personnel protection
  • Corporate asset recovery
  • Armed escorts and transportation security
  • Contracted perimeter security
  • Emergency response to threats against corporate interests

Following the events of 2077, the division has undergone operational reforms intended to improve accountability, professionalism, and coordination.

Tactical Operations

Specialized armed personnel provide additional capabilities during high-risk security incidents, including threats to corporate facilities, sensitive transports, and strategically important personnel.

These units support regular security operations when additional resources or specialized equipment are required.

Corporate Intelligence

Corporate Intelligence is responsible for gathering information, investigating threats to corporate interests, protecting sensitive material, and maintaining internal security.

The department has received renewed attention following the security failures and internal conflicts of 2077.

Relations with Night City

Arasaka maintains a complicated relationship with Night City's government, law enforcement agencies, corporations, and independent organizations.

Although Arasaka remains an influential corporate power, its security personnel do not possess general municipal policing authority. Their operations are primarily tied to corporate property, contractual obligations, and designated security responsibilities.

Militech's expanding influence within the NCPD has intensified competition for security and military contracts.

Under Troy Smith, Arasaka has adopted a more commercially focused approach toward rebuilding its relationships with local businesses and government institutions. However, the corporation's history and reputation continue to generate considerable distrust.

Current Status

As of 2080, Arasaka remains one of Night City's most powerful corporate entities, despite the considerable setbacks it suffered in 2077.

Under Regional Director Troy Smith, its local operations have experienced renewed stability, improvements in security management, and continued commercial recovery.

Nevertheless, Arasaka remains divided over its future. The consequences of the Arasaka family's internal struggles continue to influence corporate politics, and Smith's appointment has become a point of contention between traditional leadership and executives advocating reform.

Whether Arasaka can reclaim its former position in Night City remains uncertain. For now, the corporation continues strengthening its operations while competing for influence in a city that has learned it is not invincible.
